Blood Brothers – Live In Canada ….the Review

Blood Brothers – Live In Canada is the quintessential live contemporary blues rock album of 2023! Brash, howling and primarily upbeat, this recording (due out on November 17th) captures the energy and talent of two of the hottest bluesmen on the planet…Mike Zito & Albert Castiglia. It was done at the Blue Frog Live Studios in White Rock, British Columbia in May of this year. What a performance!!

As an example of just how good this band is you need go no further than the track, Hill Country Jam. With an Allmanesque flair, the song showcases the musical talents of the entire band! The dual drums of Ephraim Lowell and Matt Johnson lay down some exotic and complementary beats while Doug Byrkit keeps pace with some badass bass riffs. Lewis Stephens on keyboards is one of the hidden gems of the contemporary blues and Mike and Albert on dueling guitars are spectacular!

One of the misnomers about blues music is that the literary term “blues” meaning downcast and disheartened is applied to blues and blues rock music in general. Nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to modern contemporary blues and blues rock music. The Blood Brothers set the record straight on this recording with some songs that shake the walls and bring down the house. Their rendition of Neil Young’s Rockin’ In The Free World served as the show closer when I saw and interviewed the Blood Brothers back in April of this year. The guitar playing will leave a lasting impression on you and Mike & Albert’s vocals are a perfect fit for the song.

Gone To Texas is a song about fresh starts and reflects Mike Zito’s journey from his hometown, St. Louis, to the swampy environs of Nederland, Texas. Mike has dealt with some great highs in 2023 as the record label he co-owns, Gulf Coast Records, continues to soar with a growing list of some of the biggest talents of the contemporary blues. But he has also dealt with the devastating death of his wife, Laura, in July after a year long bout with cancer. The recording includes the song, In My Soul, that he wrote with her in mind.

Albert Castiglia is an unapologetic lover of loud guitars and pounding beats and he was the 2022 BMA award winner as Blues Rock Artist of the Year. He is the perfect compliment to Mike Zito. But Albert can chill it down also and on the song, A Thousand Heartaches, he channels a bit of Bob Seger with a great ballad. Albert continues to be one of my favorite artists and this recording does nothing but enhance his growing reputation as one of the great live performers of his generation.

Live In Canada is a crown jewel of live contemporary music with its vibrant mix of blues and blues rock and was a joy to listen to. You will get your chance to listen to the entire recording on Nov 17th!!

Ben Vee started out spinning songs on terrestrial radio and at nightclubs back in the 1970’s in his home state of Louisiana. After a career in the construction business, he returned to DJing in 2011. He now hosts two shows each week on http://www.bluesmusicfan.com and writes about the blues at http://www.benveeblues.com from his home in Connecticut. He also has a personal 24 hour stream devoted to the Roadhouse Blues… WRHB as well as a Youtube channel.

Christone “Kingfish” Ingram & Ghalia Volt on CBS “60 Minutes” This Sunday

The “60 Minutes” broadcast this Sunday, October 29th, at 7:30 pm ET will feature two young stars of the contemporary blues, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram & Ghalia Volt, as part of a segment about the blues and the mythical home of the blues, Clarksdale Mississippi. Given the scant attention given to the blues by the major media, I urge you to tune in and watch!!

Christone “Kingfish” Ingram is from Clarksdale. I got to see him at the Telluride Blues & Brews festival last month and he put on a great show. He has been mentored by Buddy Guy and Keb’ Mo’ and that is how I first became aware of him. He is only 24 and his best years as a bluesman are certainly in front of him. More importantly, he is the ambassador for the blues to a whole new generation of young people!

Ghalia Volt hails from Belgium and has spent a lot of time in New Orleans. She is a talented musician, singer, and a relentless road warrior. Since I became aware of her around 2017, she has constantly been on the road performing (or on Facebook Live during Covid).

I am excited at the opportunity for millions of people to get to know these two young blues artists during the broadcast. I hope you get a chance to watch if you are here in the USA or Canada!!

Rolling Stone Magazine’s 250 Greatest Guitar Players of all time list is HORRIBLE

Rolling Stone Magazine released its “Greatest 250 Guitar Players of All time” list last week and it is complete garbage. As many of you that follow my blog know, I don’t criticize artists. If I don’t like an album, I simply don’t write about it. So, without criticizing individuals on the list, let me just say that there are people on the list that could only be there out of some sense of “equity”….we want so many men…so many women…so many Europeans….so many alt rockers….so many jazz guitarists..etc. And what does “equity” lead to? The exclusion of some simply fantastic guitar players for reasons unknown.

Who is not on the list of greatest guitar players of all time?

Joe Bonamassa – 27 consecutive #1 Billboard Blues albums including his latest…..but he isn’t good enough for the list.

Gary Moore – An incredible body of work and holder of numerous major guitar awards during his lifetime…but not good enough.

Robin Trower – An iconic tone that has stood the test of time…..not good enough.

Peter Frampton – Not a personal favorite as an artist, but one of the defining guitar players of his generation….not good enough.

Yngwie Malmsteen – He has created music on a guitar that defies the laws of nature (and I always assumed he had to be double jointed on all his fingers to do it!) ….not good enough.

There are people on the list who are great singers & songwriters and pluck one note. There are people on that list that are great performers but nothing in their body of work would suggest that they are guitar giants. And if you are gonna be among the 250 best EVER, you might think the artists would have slews of awards from Guitar music associations that they have garnered over their career or at least acknowledgement from your peers that you are among the best ever….not needed for the Rolling Stone magazine list apparently.

I do several annual lists of Contemporary Blues Artists. The most popular is my Roadhouse Blues 66 Best Songs of the Year. It takes an enormous amount of time to choose 66 songs from among the 9000 or so I receive and/or play during my BMFR shows during the year. It is difficult to make the final choices…particularly from 30 to 66. So I do understand how difficult the selection process may have been for the staff who compiled the list. But after reviewing the Rolling Stone magazine list several times, I don’t believe they applied even the modicum of a standard to their selection process. And if I am wrong, show me the selection process criteria that ended up excluding Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore, Robin Trower, Peter Frampton, and Yngwie Malmsteen from the list!! How could that possibly happen when applying a standard that I would assume included the body of work, peer acknowledgement and specific guitar awards won?

Rolling Stone magazine over the years has “re-reviewed” albums after an outcry from the readers and followers. Hopefully, they will “re-review” their list soon cuz it is BAD.

Post Script added December 26, 2023…..segment of an article in the Wall Street Journal interview of Chrissie Hynde.

WSJ: You had an enviable 2023. You released a new Pretenders album, you got back out on the road, and you were named one of the Top 250 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone.

CHRISSIE HYNDE: Well, that’s nonsense. As the English would say, better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. I can’t see that I fit into that category at all. I find it hilarious.

Jason Ricci and the Bad Kind – Behind the Veil review

Jason Ricci is one of the blues’ great harmonica players and he has been busy payin’ his blues dues since his first recording in 1995. Jason has appeared as a guest artist on albums from Johnny Winters, Ana Popovic, Joe Louis Walter, Walter Trout, Mike Zito, and Nick Moss to name just a few of the contemporary blues best that think the world of his talent. The new album, Jason Ricci and the Bad Kind – Behind the Veil, is yet another showcase for the talent of this gifted artist.

The new record is the third outing for Jason Ricci and the Bad Kind and their debut on the up and coming blues label, Gulf Coast Records. Jason (vocals, diatonic and chord harmonica) is joined on the recording by his wife Kaitlin Dibble (vocals), Brent Johnson (guitar and backup vocals), Jack Joshua (double bass, electric bass, vocals, and backup vocals), and John Perkins (drums and backup vocals). Special guests include Joe Krown (piano and Hammond B3 organ, Gulf Coast labelmate Joanna Connor and Lauren Mitchell (backup vocals).

Though Jason is originally from Maine and has spent time in Idaho, Memphis, and Florida, he now calls New Orleans home. That is where I first became aware of him a dozen years ago or so. Jason’s persona and the New Orleans “laissez faire” vibe have meshed together to produce music on Behind the Veil that highlight his incredible skills and the “let the good times roll” spirit of the Crescent City.

The song 5-10-15 is the first song on the album. It is a cover of the classic tune by Ruth Brown and was the reason for the entire recording according to Jason. “This was actually the song that made me want to record this CD. Singer Kaitlin Dibble has been singing this number for a few years and the wheels in my mind started turning on how to capture it the way I heard so many tunes on Bob Murret’s WWOZ show. I love the New Orleans R&B feel and I really think we captured it here thanks to Tony Daigle (co-producer), Kid Andersen and the band, of course. The whole reason we recorded this CD live in one room was centered around this number.”

There are two energetic instrumentals on the recording that I loved : Hip Hug-Her and Baked Potato. Both demonstrate just how a tight an ensemble they are and..oh my…Joe Krown on the Hammond organ is simply incredible. The tune Wrong Kind of Easy/Nobody But You, which opens with a cool double bass riff, is sultry “film noire” blues and is followed perfectly by an incredible cover of Saint James Infirmary. Jason has a distinctive voice and also channels a bit of Dr. John for the rousing Ain’t She Fine….oh yeah!! And Shipwreck with the lyric “and the devil is divin’ down to take a peak” is well worth a listen.

Beyond the Veil is entertaining energetic contemporary blues reflective of Jason’s talent and the jazzy R&B New Orleans spirit which he clearly has embraced. Jason has won numerous blues awards for his harmonica playing over the years. This recording deserves “album of year” consideration as a tour de force of the modern blues that respects the past and blazes new musical paths into the future.

Steal My Contemporary Blues Playlists for your Station – PLEASE – And Help Me find the Elon Musk of the Blues!!

Right now, somewhere on the face of the planet, is a radio station or stream manager, someone sitting in a car scanning the radio dial, or possibly YOU searching for some new music!! In major urban markets if you listen to terrestrial radio, your choices are limited to competing classic rock stations, country, hip hop, or well…..variations of the same and absolutely no contemporary blues . If you have satellite radio, you can tune in to ONE channel on Sirius XM!! If you are a bit more industrious, you can play your phone through your car radio and listen to a variety of small niche blues stations including my own…WRHB (hit the tab at top on my blog home page or on a phone just click the menu on the home page and chose WRHB). You can also go to http://www.bluesmusicfan.com where I spin two shows each week on a station providing radio hosts and 24 hours a day of the blues.

How can this be?? How is it that no major radio stations or streams feature the contemporary blues? How is it that the 5 or 6 major record labels worldwide carry only a handful of blues artists?? The primary reason I hear is that there isn’t enough content….that the blues are dead!! Let’s see…. Assume a broadcast hour that includes 10 minutes of commercials, 5 minutes of Radio Host talk, and 45 minutes of music. Over 24 hours, that is 18 hours or 1,080 minutes of music. In any given year that means you need 6600 or so hours of contemporary blues to fill the airwaves, smart phones, tablets, and computer screens. Wow…seems like a lot doesn’t it? What if I told you that last year ALONE, I personally received 9400 new contemporary blues songs. That is approximately 800 hours of new music. And I am a small time radio host relying on submittals from artists that have heard of me, artists I know, and through my association with Blues Music Fan Radio. I would say that the contemporary blues music pool in any given year over just the last 10 years contains at least 1200 hours of newly released music!!

Sooo…if the contemporary blues station in your market just wanted to play contemporary blues hits from the last three years in heavy rotation, hits from the last decade in medium rotation, contemporary blues from 2000 in light rotation, and also draw from THOUSANDS of hours of classic blues, you could easily fill the airwaves of a major urban market with 24 hours a day of some badass blues!! How do I know it is possible? Because Blues Music Fan Radio and WRHB do it every day as commercial free non profit streams!! We just can’t reach the numbers of listeners to be commercially viable. (Most internet radio streams are limited to several hundred or a couple thousand simultaneous streams of the music because of the “per stream” costs.)

We need an Elon Musk of the blues! Someone with the love, vision, passion, and start up money to fuel a wave of contemporary blues stations across the globe. Perhaps some of the stations in countries around the world will be based on satellite technology (e.g. Star Link), others on streaming broadcasts that allow tens of thousands of listeners, and, most importantly in terms of exposure, terrestrial stations reaching the tens of millions of people going about their lives in their cars every day!

In all honestly, perhaps I am too close to the music and blinded to the challenges of running a major market radio station or internet stream. I certainly love the contemporary blues and there are so many talented artists to chose from to listen to. But I also owned and ran a successful consulting practice for almost 25 years. I understand the “dollars and cents” and my gut tells me that the fusion of contemporary blues artists, savvy marketing, and wide spread exposure would yield a marketplace where blues artists get their due, investors make back their money, and people discover just how vibrant and entertaining the contemporary blues market really is!!!! If hip hop & rap can command the attention of Wall Street and major record labels, surely the contemporary blues can if given just half a chance!!

If you have thoughts, suggestions, or feel the need to tell me that I am out of mind, please comment below. I will read every one of them!!

Leo Lyons was the legendary bassist for Ten Years After at Woodstock. All these years later, he has produced one truly badass blues rock album. I love every song on it!

Ole Lonesome – Tejas Motel ….the review

When given the opportunity, I enjoy getting off the interstate and using the old highways that often run parallel to them. Doing this in south Louisiana and southeastern Texas will put you on Hwy 90 or Hwy 190 in places. The route will roll you through sleepy towns with massive oak trees and towering pines. Life in these towns moves at a slower more comfortable place and the people are friendly and welcoming. Old motels dot the highways as symbols of the high powered commerce of a bygone era before the interstate came through. It was the nighttime view of an old sign for one such place that inspired the new recording Tejas Motel by Ole Lonesome.

Ole Lonesome is a Texas band from the same Golden Triangle in southeastern Texas that gave rise to the legendary Johnny Winters, his brother Edgar, and Janis Joplin. Equal parts swamp and huge stands of pine, the area is dominated by oil facilities and paper mills and populated by fiercely independent and hard working blue collar people that have an over sized love of outdoor life. Lead by Zach Feemster, lead vocalist and guitar player, Tejas Motel captures some superlative vignettes of the lives and loves of these people. As Zach stated in an interview, “I wouldn’t necessarily call it a concept album, but I can definitely say that if each song was a character, they would be well acquainted with each other. The energy between the songs strengthens the vision and brings to life the story of Tejas Motel.”

In terms of the music, I place Ole Lonesome squarely among some of my other favorite contemporary blues infused artists; Blackberry Smoke, Marcus King, and Robert Jon & the Wreck. You can also hear whispers of the Allman Brothers, Johnny Winter, & Lynyrd Skynyrd in the music (which is never a bad thing). The other members of the band are Wesley Hardin (Bass), Gregory Mosley (Keys), Jimmy Devers (Drums & Percussion), and Greg Achord (Guitar). Together this group has produced an engaging album full of songs and musical imagery that should make a lasting impression on you.

All 10 songs on the album are originals. My favorite on this album is very hard to pick given the quality of all the songs but it would have to be Ain’t No Wrong, a straight up badass bluzin’ tune. A close second is the title cut with its vivid imagery of a place I am pretty sure I have stayed at a time or two during my travels. Natural Fact is an awesome song and Mama’s Worry, Easy Street, Yvette, Golden Chevy, Steady Mistreater, and The Fool have all made it onto my Blues Music Fan Radio show playlists since the release of the album in July.

Tejas Motel is the label debut for Ole Lonesome on Gulf Coast Records which is co-owned by Mike Zito. Mike and Zach worked together a decade ago when they toured for Mike’s Greyhound album. And Mike sits in for an awesome tune on the new recording entitled Lo Key.

Ole Lonesome have been referred to as a swamp rock band, southern rockers, and a blues rockin’ group. I say they are one badass Roadhouse bluzin’ assembly of Texas musicians steeped in the blues and kickin’ out contemporary jams that audiences will love!!
