A Ben Vee Roadhouse Blues Fest Thursday on BMFR 3-5 pm ET (August 18, 2022)

Over FIFTY major roadhouse blues artists will be appearing at blues festivals in Europe, Canada, and three locations in the United States this weekend. In Belgium (Swing…Blues for the People Festival), Canada (Edmonton Blues Festival), New Hampshire (White Mountain Boogie and Blues Festival), New York (Chenango Blues Festival), & Indiana (Madison Ribberfest), people will be on the road today headed for a weekend of family, friends, food, and some badass music.

I will be spinning songs by some of the artists appearing at the festivals during my Roadhouse blues show from 3-5 pm ET on http://www.bluesmusicfan.com. I plan on squeezing in as many tunes as I can from Keb’ Mo’, Samantha Fish, Walter Trout, Jimmie Vaughan, Popa Chubby, Sue Foley, Ghalia Volt, Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps, Angel Forrest, Ana Popovic, the Altered Five Blues Band, Joyann Parker, G-20, Mud Morganfield, and the other fabulous acts that will be on stage.

For a complete listing of all the artists, checkout my video on the Ben Vee Youtube channel!

Sue Foley – A Canadian at home in Texas on Pinky’s Blues

Sue Foley saw her first blues concert in Canada at the age of 15 and she has been captivated by the blues ever since. She is a Texas infused Canadian who has released 16 albums since 1992. A talented singer, songwriter, and guitarist, she exhibits her talent and her love of the blues genre on the new recording Pinky’s Blues. The name of the album comes from her hot pink Fender guitar which is front and center on the songs.

The album was recorded over a three day period during the pandemic in 2020 and features Chris “the Whipper” Layton of Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble fame, Mike Flanigin on the Hammond B3 organ (he also produced the album) and Jon Penner on bass who has been with Sue on a number of her recordings over the years.

The signature cut on the album is Hurricane Girl which features a special appearance by the renown Jimmie Vaughan on rhythm guitar. It is simply some badass roadhouse blues and a perfect vehicle for Sue’s talent. As she sings in the song, she is a force of nature that has paid her dues in a career spanning over 30 years. Check out the video here !!

Another song and video release from the album is Dallas Man. It is vintage upbeat Texas blues and she wrote it while thinking of all of the great bluesmen that have come out of Dallas including Freddie King, Bugs Henderson, Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan, Anson Funderburgh, and Doyle Bramhall II to mention just a few. There is also a third song and video that I really enjoyed, Southern Men, because of the numerous shots focused on Sue playin’ that damn guitar.

I also enjoyed Two Bit Texas Town (written by another Texas legend Angela Strehli), Stop These Tears (written by Lavelle White), and Frankie Lee Sim’s Boogie Real Low. And if you want a straight up sampling of Sue’s guitar playing prowess just listen to the instrumental title cut….mhmm.

Sue has embarked on an extensive tour of Canada, the United States, and Europe over the next year to support the album. I hope to be among the crowd that gets a chance to see this stellar performing artist.

Roadhouse Blues News – New Albums On the Way

Over the next several months a number of new roadhouse blues albums will be released. This is just a sampling that includes artists with well established reputations as well as several “up ‘n comers” that I think you will like.

Due in September

Avey Grouws Band – Tell Tale Heart

This band from Iowa was one of my favorites for 2020 and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in 2021!

Colin Linden – bLOW

Tas Cru – Broke Down Busted Up

Robert Jon & The Wreck – Shine a Light on Me Brother

Another great band from California with a southern blues rockin’ style.

Teresa James & the Rhythm Kings – Rose-Colored Glasses Vol. 1

One of the great voices of the contemporary blues.

Tony Holiday – Porch Sessions Vol. 2

I loved the first Porch Sessions album. This one should be good too!

Altered Five Blues Band – Holler If You Hear Me

Featuring Jeff Taylor, who is an awesome singer, this band out of Wisconsin is a perennial roadhouse favorite.

Due in October

The Doobie Brothers – Liberte

They have had a long and storied career. I have listened to all 4 of the singles released so far and the southern blues rock vibe is great.

Sue Foley – Pinkey’s Blues

A Canadian artist with strong ties to Austin, Texas who is a great guitar player, singer, and songwriter.

Due in November

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss – Raise the Roof

It has been a long time coming but the new collaboration between these two superstars picks up right where they left off!

Due in Early 2022

Eric Gales – I Want My Crown

Produced by Joe Bonamassa. Should be an incredible blues rock recording.

Elles Bailey – Shining in the Half Light

This British talent is a roots blues and blues rocker with a great voice and style.

As they are released or if I am lucky enough to make the early distribution list, you will find songs from these albums in rotation on my 24 hour roadhouse blues stream at WRHB. They will also be featured during my future Ben Vee Roadhouse Blues shows on BluesMusicFanRadio from 12-2 pm EDT on Tuesdays and from 3-5 pm EDT on Thursdays.

March 24th BMFR Roadhouse Blues Nooner 12-2 pm EST

It’s time for the March 24th BMFR Roadhouse Blues Nooner at http://www.bluesmusicfan.com. Tune in from 12-2 pm EST as I roll out tunes by Mud Morganfield, Coyote Kings, Samantha Fish, Anthony Geraci, Dana Fuchs, Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa and many more!!

Hope ya stayin’ safe! One small benefit of a bit of home isolation is you get to listen to more music! And the more you listen and purchase and download ones that you like from my playlist, the more it will benefit these great blues artists that are, by and large, really feeling the impact NOW of the lack of gigs to play!! With the exception of a few, most blues artists aren’t wealthy…they are like you and me..bit worried about the immediate future and how to pay the bills as they roll in amidst the pandemic.

Best of the Blues 2018 – Ben Vee’s Roadhouse 66 Song List

Similar to the old Route 66 that wound from the heart of the United States in Chicago to the west coast and captured some of the best of what America has to offer, the Ben Vee Roadhouse 66 song list meanders world wide from Africa to Europe to North and South America.. on then to Australia and up to Asia capturing the best blues songs of 2018. The roadhouse blues is situated at the crossroads of the blues and rock genres so there are plenty of upbeat tunes and a number of belly grinders on the list. The selection includes 15 female singers..a dozen blues rockers…several roots blues tunes and numbers of hot contemporary blues recordings…I hope you download and enjoy listening to all the songs!!

As a DJ, in 2018 I played over 200 sets and 500 hours of blues music or roughly 6,000 songs for listening audiences. On my 24 hour Roadhouse blues stream, I streamed thousands more. Picking the best 66 from my broadcasts was both a labor of love and a huge challenge.  The position of the songs on the list is of little consequence…you might list them in a different order or include ones that I didn’t.  The important thing is that these 66 tunes are a “top shelf” sampling of a vibrant and growing contemporary blues market. Don’t let ANYONE tell you that the blues are dead or dying!!  I encourage you to turn your friends on to songs on the list and help spread the news that, as Buddy Guy said on his latest album, the blues is alive and well!!
