Roadhouse Bluzin 12-2 pm ET on BMFR

When did the roadhouse blues begin? It happened when Muddy Waters plugged his guitar into an amplifier back in the 1940’s. His musical collaboration with Willie Dixon then inspired a young generation of primarily British artists including Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Rory Gallagher, Alvin Lee, and Jeff Beck. These artist in turn inspired Stevie Ray Vaughan, George Thorogood, Gary Moore, Walter Trout, Jeff Healey and contemporary artists like Joe Bonamassa and Eric Gales. Join me today for some modern roadhouse blues featuring new music from Jeff Pitchell, Chris BadNews Barnes, Zachary Wayne and some classics from Johnny Winters, The Doors, and ZZ Top. It’s 12-2 pm ET on www.bluesmusicfan.com!!

Ben Vee’s Roadhouse Music News – New Blues & Blues Rock Releases

We get the month of May going with new Roadhouse blues & blues rock album releases from Reverend Shawn Amos, Misty Blues, Jeff Pitchell, Gary Cain and a slew of singles including new songs by The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Eliza Neals, and Quin Sullivan! I hope you get a chance to follow the links and enjoy some badass contemporary blues!!

Recordings Out Now – Albums

Reverend Shawn Amos – Soul Brother No. 1 (Immediate Family Records)

I’ve always considered the Reverend Shawn Amos the Elvis Costello of the contemporary blues. For the new recording Soul Brother No 1, he returns to his Harlem roots with several soul blues tunes and some edgy social observations. There are also several catchy upbeat contemporary blues tunes of the style that I have always associated with him that should garner a lot of airplay.

Misty Blues – Silver Lining

Based in Massachusetts, Misty Blue is led by the deep voiced Gina Coleman. Tinged with a bit of jazz and funk, Misty Blues’ new recording Silver Lining is a chill contemporary blues listen featuring a nice horn section and some great beats!

Jeff Pitchell – Brown Eyed Blues (Dequello Records)

Featuring appearances by Reese Wynans, Rick Derringer, Duane Betts, Charles Neville and Michael Allman, the new Jeff Pitchell recording Brown Eyed Blues is some straight up badass roadhouse blues….oh yeah!!

Gary Cain – Outside the Lines (Qayn Records)

Gary Cain is a singer, songwriter, and one damn fine guitar player. On the new recording Outside the Lines listen to Attitude and you will see what I mean. Gary is a natural blues rocker who can also funk it up real nice! Overall it is a great contemporary blues album!

AJ Fullerton – Closer (Color Red Records)

AJ Fullerton is a Colorado based artist that I got to see last fall at the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival. His new album, Closer, showcases his roots based sound and songwriting acumen. I have been predicting big things for AJ since I first heard him six or seven years ago and the new album reaffirms his status as an outstanding roadhouse blues talent.

Son Henry & T. Rogers – Grace (Twang House Records)

Son Henry is a New York state native who has teamed with the Hungarian T. Rogers Band to produce a stellar roots recording, Grace. Son has a fabulous voice and writes such great songs. Straddling the line between the blues and light country music (as do Bonnie Raitt and Chris Stapleton), the new recording is well worth a listen!!

Lizz Wright – Shadow (Blues & Greens Records)

Lizz Wright has one of the great voices of her generation and the new recording Shadow is simply fabulous. Give the songs Sweet Feeling and Your Love a listen and I bet you will agree!

Jesse Redwing – Trim the Fat

Jesse Redwing is another talented Australian that should continue to make inroads into the North American and European contemporary blues markets with his third album, Trim the Fat. He will be touring in Europe during the month of May. If any of you readers get to see him…drop me a line and let me know what ya think!!

New Blues/Blues Rock/Roots Music Releases for April 26th

Another great batch of new album releases including recordings by Anders Osborne, Deb Ryder, Chris “Bad News” Barnes and a great blues rock band out of Indonesia, Gugun Blues Shelter. Plus new singles from Eddie 9V, Paul Steward, and Jesse Dayton. I hope you have a chance to click on the links and listen to some of these great roadhouse blues artists!! And take a look at all the artists releasing music in the coming month…Wow!

Recordings Out Now – Albums

Anders Osborne – Picasso’s Villa (5th Ward Records)

This New Orleans artist have been a favorite of mine for years and I finally got to see him this past September. The new album is modern roots music with echoes of Neil Young & Crazy Horse on several tunes. Anders songwriting is a level above most of his peers….no soft lyrics & la la music here. The rhythms are backed by thoughtful observation of life and even a tribute to Doctor John.

Chris “Bad News” Barnes – Bad News Travels Fast (Gulf Coast Records)

Chris “Bad News” Barnes is a NYC comedian that started his blues career in 2017 and he is one serious bluesman as evidenced by the blues stars that contribute their talent on the album: Walter Trout, Jimmy Hall, and Sugaray Rayford. I really enjoyed this recording!!

Deb Ryder – Live and Havin’ Fun (VizzTone Records)

This live recording is a true showcase for one of the belles of the blues, Deb Ryder. A powerful growling voice is matched with some great upbeat tunes that are a perfect fit for my roadhouse blues playlists.

Jennifer Lyn & the Groove Review – Live From the Northern Plains (J and R Collective LLC)

A singer and a guitarist, Jennifer Lyn does a great job covering songs by Bonnie Raitt, the Allman Brothers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and others on this live recording. It’s a good listen!

Judith Hill – Letters from a Black Widow (Regime Music Group)

Judith Hill was given the tabloid moniker of “Black Widow” for her collaborations with Michael Jackson and Prince. Now she faces down her detractors with a powerful album full of blues, soul, funk, and gospel music….the lady has a great voice!!

Val Starr and the Blues Rocket – To the Blues and Back Again (Sandwich Factory Records)

Val Starr is a California singer and rhythm guitar player. On her seventh album, she continues to crank out a brand of the blues that is perfect for a weekend roadhouse or blues bar visit if she gets close to your area.

Scott Low – The Appalachian Blues

Scott Low left Athens and moved to the Georgia countryside to open a fly fishing art music camp. He has kept recording and his acoustic roots music is chill and refreshing. The title cut is well worth the price of admission!

Gugun Blues Shelter – Coming Out (AFE Records)

Gugun Blues Shelter is a badass Indonesian blues rock band! This trio has worked its way onto my bucket list!! Now the question is how the heck do I get back to Jakarta??!! (I was there on biz in the 90’s.) I have some standing invitations to visit New Zealand and Australia….maybe I can make one big trip 😜

Recordings Out Now – Albums

Johnny Burgin – Ramblin’ Coast to Coast (Straight Shooter Records)

The new album is unapologetic rockin’ Chicago Blues….mhmmm. I want to see this man play!!

Anthony Geraci – Tears in My Eyes

Anthony has paid his blues dues during a career that has spanned six decades. This new album simply reinforces his status as one of the great piano players of his generation!!

T Bone Burnett – The Other Side (Electro Magnetic Corporation)

The Other Side is a melodic celebration of roots music by T Bone Burnett, an artist that has always captivated me with his songwriting.

Doug MacLeod – Raw Blues 2

A fabulous songwriter whose acoustic guitar talent has garnered him numerous major blues awards over the last five years, Doug MacLeod is the delta blues minstrel to a new generation of blues listeners.

Ghost-Note – Mustard n’Onions

Ghost-Note has a cool funky jazzy percussion based sound that is inventive and yet still familiar. When you want to get your funk on, Mustard n’Onions is well worth a listen!

Big Wolf Band – Rebel’s Journey

Jonathan Earp is the heart and soul of this UK based blues rock band. The Big Wolf Band has been together for a decade and they continue their rise as one of the best contemporary bands in the blues rock genre with the new Rebel’s Journey recording.

Bart Bryant – Backstage II (Horizon Records)

Singer/Guitarist Bart Bryant opens the new album with a fantastic cover of Day of the Eagle featuring a truly impressive horn section! It just gets better from there! Bart hails for Connecticut and I am hoping to meet and chat with him real soon!!

Little Bobby – Dealing From the Bottom of the Deck (Untouchable Productions)

Minnesota based artist Little Bobby is a native American and third generation blues artist. He also owns an historic building in McIntosh that hosts a live venue, a music museum, and a music production studio! It would be a cool road trip to venture to mid America to hear his latest recording which is GREAT!

Roadhouse Blues News : New Black Keys, Marcus King, Eric Bibb, Cedric Burnside & More!

Four major contemporary blues/blues rock artists all released albums today: The Black Keys, Marcus King, Eric Bibb and Cedric Burnside!! That along with a new video from Walter Trout and singles from Big Head Todd and the Monsters and Elles Bailey makes this a BIG week for the Roadhouse Blues!!

Recordings Out Now – Albums

The Black Keys – Ohio Players [Nonesuch Records]

For the under 40 generation, the Black Keys visceral blues rock style has led to renewed interest in the blues overall. Unfortunately this recording features no real blues tunes though there are several catchy upbeat songs that will make my Roadhouse playlists.

Marcus King – Mood Swings [Republic Records]

As I’ve written several times, Marcus King is one of the great R&B voices of his generation. This is a darker and more introspective recording than his previous albums; he truly bares his soul and the music that pours out is chill and beautiful.

Eric Bibb – Live at The Scala Theatre Stockholm [Repute Records Ltd)

Though the terms are out of fashion, Eric Bibb’s new live recording is a riveting performance of folk music and acoustic blues at its finest. His voice gives meaning to every syllable he sings and his guitar playing is stellar. What a fabulous recording!!

Cedric Burnside – Hill Country Love [Mascot Label Group/Provogue]

Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, RL Burnside, who pioneered the Mississippi Hill Country blues style, Cedric Burnside has created yet another catchy contemporary blues album. His last recording won a Grammy Award and this one will also garner a lot of attention!!

Scott H. Biram – The One & Only Scott H. Biram [Bloodshot Records]

This is gritty explicit album of life observances by Texan Scott H. Biram. The music is somewhere between outlaw country and the delta blues with a hefty dash of blues rock….think Robert Johnson and Hank Williams spend a weekend playing at the same bar and Jim Morrison stumbles in!

New Single Releases
