Canadian Blues Cookin’ with Friends in Kell’s Kitchen
As I have stated many times, there are some fabulous blues men and women up in Canada that the larger American and European audiences need to hear about. One of those is a very talented guitar player from Ontario by the name of Shawn Kellerman. Entering his third decade as a bluesman, Shawn has gathered a lot of friends along the way. Over twenty of them lend their talents to his new recording Kell’s Kitchen.
Bobby Rush, who Shawn has worked with for a number of years, contributes his vocal talents to one of my favorite songs on the album We Are Blues Men. And one of my favorite harmonica players, Jason Ricci out of New Orleans, sits in on three other tunes: Hard Man to Please, You’re Gonna Learn From This One, and Runnin’ Back to Saskatoon (which is an vintage cover of a tune by the Guess Who!). Another of Canada’s fantastic new female singers, Meghan Parnell of Bywater Call, also contributes her talents for 4 of the cuts on the recording. And Shawn’s friend Zoom from Michigan belts out her soulful vocals on the song, Mac & Cheese.
Shawn is also a bit of a guitar nerd (like Joe Bonamassa) and tours with a whole trunkful of guitars that provide different tones for his music. I particularly loved his guitar playing on Down By the River where the lead vocals are provided by Noah Allard and Shawn gets to focus on producing some badass riffs.
Another song on the album that I absolutely loved is the last track on the recording, Living Off the Love You Give. This is a Little Milton tune that features the late Lucky Peterson on the Hammond B3 organ. Shawn was part of Lucky’s band for eight years and his love and respect for both of these great bluesmen shines through in this energetic rendition.
Kell’s Kitchen is some mighty fine blues cookin’….. heavy on the blues with nice splashes of soul and funk. All the best ingredients of the blues are featured on this fabulous recording….give it a listen!!

Badass Blues : Badnews Travels Fast by Chris Bandnews Barnes
More than a generation ago, two young comedians helped revitalize the blues with a skit on Saturday Night Live and then John Belushi & Dan Akroyd as the The Blues Brothers took the world by storm. Fast forward to 2017 and another comedian Chris Badnews Barnes made a foray into the blues backed by musicians from Saturday Night Live and Conan O’Brien’s late night crew. The Hokum Blues album generated a lot of buzz and was critically acclaimed for its upbeat bluzin’ style and witty lyrics.

Now in 2024, Chris has reunited with award winning producer Tom Hambridge to put out an instant contender for blues album of the year Badnews Travels Fast. The recording is an excellent example of the Roadhouse Blues that I love to spin. All the songs are co-written by Chris and Tom and are a perfect melding of social observation, wit and style. And some world class bluesmen add their talents to the recording: Jimmy Hall, Walter Trout, and Sugaray Rayford. The core band is a fabulous group of musicians including Chris on vocals, Tom on drums, Kenny Greenberg on guitars, Tommy McDonald on bass, Mike Rojas on keyboards, a horn section of Max Abrams on Sax and Steve Patrick on Trumpet, and backing vocals by Tabitha Fair.
There is absolutely no song on the album that I don’t love and choosing my favorite is almost impossible but I will give the nod to You Right Baby for its exceptional vocal interplay between Chris and Sugaray. I believe it is worthy of consideration as THE blues song of 2024. And the song Ambushed By the Blues with its lyric about fighting on while facing the blues resonates with me personally. For pure roadhouse rockin’ blues, give BadNews Travels Fast, The Juice Ain’t Worth the Squeeze, BluesBaller Baby, His Majesty The Baby, and Skin to Skin a listen. Chris funks it up nicely on Do The Houdini and both True Blues with Walter Trout and A Bluesman Can’t Cry with Jimmy Hall are some classic chillin’ blues.
Badnews Travels Fast came out in late April and I have found myself returning to the recording again and again over the last month as I develop playlists for my shows. It is simply a modern and instant example of the best that the contemporary blues has to offer. And a special shout out to Gulf Coast Records and Mike Zito for helping bring this music project to fruition! I can’t wait to get the chance to see Chris Badnews Barnes live!! And YOU can help the BadNews Travel Fast by purchasing a copy of this tremendous recording and spreading the news to friends and family about some BADASS contemporary blues.
